Description:
1945 Grumman FM-2 Wildcat – $1,500,000
This 1945 Grumman FM-2 Wildcat, N11FE, is a unique warbird featuring three passenger seats in the rear fuselage, making it unlike most surviving Wildcats. With 2,829 total airframe hours, the aircraft has 274 hours since major overhaul on its Wright Cyclone R-1820-76D engine, which was overhauled by Roger Pickett at Air Motive, Inc. in July 2008 using mostly new parts, including a heavy-duty crankshaft, cylinders, bearings, pistons, and rings, all documented. The Hamilton Standard 33D50 propeller has 274 hours since overhaul, with its prop AD due in May 2029.
The avionics include a King KX-170B Nav/Comm, King KX-175B TSO Nav/Comm, King KT-76 Transponder, King KMA-20 TSO Comm Panel, and an Artex ELT 100. The aircraft is flown regularly, is currently in annual, and performs well.
With a rich Navy and civilian history spanning over seventy years, this Wildcat represents a significant piece of aviation heritage. While not a combat veteran, it has served in various roles, from the GM Eastern plants in New Jersey to Escort Carriers in the Pacific, as well as participating in airshows and providing flight experiences to multiple generations.
